How Grace Became Amazing

IMG_5056For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

When was the last time you were genuinely amazed? God uses the smallest and what appears to be the most insignificant things in our world to show us His miracles and grace.

Late last summer, my sister Jeanie was fascinated by a small army of tiny caterpillars crawling all over, and devouring, the leaves of a milkweed plant near a red wooden shed in her backyard. One of the caterpillars caught her eye because of its size, and the distance it had traveled from the milkweed plant to make its temporary home on the back of a lawn chair. She lovingly named it Grace, and documented in photos Grace’s transformation, which she shared with me via text message every day. I couldn’t wait to get the new day’s photo of Grace. I was caught up in the wonder of it all. Of course, I knew caterpillars became butterflies, but I was seeing this process in a whole new light—the light of God’s grace.

And so, I was inspired to write How Grace Became Amazing, a book about how Grace, a chubby and shy caterpillar, transforms in front of our eyes to become a creature of beauty and splendor. Grace shows us how every living creature, both large and small, has the ability through faith, to become amazing.

God places beautiful things in our lives every day—reminders that he loves and cares for us—sunsets, oceans, a smile from a child, a hug from a loved one, and yes, caterpillars and butterflies.

But why now, and why the message of grace? We all need to hear the message of grace, because it is the greatest gift that our Lord pours on us. Simply put, grace is that thing that we don’t earn or deserve, but God loves us so much that he gives it to us anyway.

If God cares enough about a caterpillar and giving this creature splendor and wings to soar, doesn’t it also speak volumes how his grace and love can transform us, too?

To the skeptic, Grace is merely a caterpillar who went through a metamorphosis. To those who believe in the power of our Lord, she’s absolutely AMAZING!
