Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’ Then the devil left him,and angels came and attended him. Matthew 4:8-11
We are so tempted everyday by sin–by the things of this world–by what feels “good” or “right” in the moment. But it’s often these temptations (and promises of more) that keep us in chains. Because that satisfaction–that “good” feeling, that feeling that we are justified or deserving is often fleeting. Momentary distractions, with often lasting consequences–
Angry words and actions too difficult to take back.
Unhealthy food too good to resist.
Gossip too juicy to ignore.
Social media rabbit holes too difficult to climb out of.
And what do they leave us with–guilt, unhealthy bodies and lifestyles, regret, envy, and wasted time. There is only one worthy of our attention–our distraction–the Lord!
